Masquerade Bell Lanterns

The first of this series were intended to be gongs or bells made from the bottom end of oxygen tanks… but it turned out that cutting and welding to the tank destroyed the tone. Instead, I mounted the first four to my studio as light fixtures.

Because they are so heavy they were not commercially practical to ship, but they were really fun to design. I would have loved it if these could have been an ongoing project.

Junk Monkey— Masquerade Bell Lantern Series

This lantern has such expressive character! The ears and nose are made from the handles used to lift heavy propane tanks by crane or chain hoist. The eyes, of course, are gears with a bit of the original red paint left on.

Singing Buddha — Masquerade Bell Lantern Series

This lantern is a reworking of an African mask design I previously used in my Face of Spades series. Although the face is inspired by an African piece, the ears were inspired by the oversize earlobes commonly seen on sculptures of the Buddha.
