Narrative Sculpture

Poetry and storytelling were my first art discipline, so it’s only natural I would take a narrative approach to sculpture on occasion. Because classic fairy tales are so well known, I felt they were a perfect subject matter for sculpture, gates or fences. Muralists and painters frequently illustrate stories, myths or folk tales but you don’t see it a lot in metal work.

The 3 Little Pigs: A Story in Steel

The house is made from an old refrigerator drawer and the rest is recycled steel plate. The wind from the wolf’s mouth is copper plated welding rod. The plants are scrap left over from cutting out the flames on the Firebird Grill.

Little Red Riding Hood Sculpture

Here’s another narrative sculpture that Mya designed. Click the thumbnail images to see detail shots. I love the way she used the tree and the bed post to organize the frames of the story! Pretty sophisticated work for a sixteen-year old.This piece can either be a table-top sculpture, or can be mounted to the wall with shelf brackets.
