Luminaries

The first luminaries I made were for the Mixed Media Installation Offrenda for Those Who Died on the Road, assembled for a Dia de los Muertes show at Jaqueline Ross Gallery. People went nuts for them. Over the next couple years I made hundreds, maybe thousands of them, coming up with a huge number of designs.

The thing I loved best about these was the way that the cut design glowed but also projected the image on the wall. The projected image would move as the candle inside flickered, making the image come alive.

These pre-dated the fire pits I later became known for. While I don’t remember that the luminaries directly inspired the idea for the fire pits, they definitely taught me a lot about working with light, shadow and projections.

Custom Fire Pit designs are all about making sure you get exactly what you’re looking for. Lead times for custom work are typically much longer, involving concept discussions, collaboration on image research, and drawings. I am not able to do custom sizes.
