Mosaic in Marble

My first four mosaics in marble were commissioned by Eson Chan, Art Director at Northeastern University Magazine,to illustrate an article about dolphin watching off the coast of Spain. Days of the Dolphin, by Gary Goshgarian ran in the November Issue, 2002. Marble was the obvious choice of material when illustrating a story about the Mediterranean.

I followed that with a small mosaic based on an anatomical drawing by Bartolomeo Eustachi, as a commission for a massage therapist. Marble again made sense, because the natural colors were perfect for rendering musculature and tissue. Ten years later I would reprise this piece in far greater detail as the first in my Anatomy Set in Stone Series.

Then, an erotic illustration from Ancient Greek Red-figure pottery. Again, the marble perfectly matched the colors of the glaze.

Since 2015 I have been working exclusively in marble mosaic— Anatomy Set in Stone is a series of 22 life size mosaics that replicate Bartolomeo Eustachi’s 16th century anatomical engravings in marble, stone and precious gems. The mosaics are composed mainly of marble, travertine, onyx, limestone, blue and pink quartz. The eyes are black garnet and star ruby, sapphire or tiger eye. The veins and arteries are lapis lazuli and red jasper.

Anatomy Set in Stone, 22 Mosaics of Eustachi’s Anatomical Engravings.

Using marble, stone and precious gems I am creating a series of 12 mosaics that replicate Bartolomeo Eustachi’s 16th Century anatomical engravings. As each mosaic is finished, it is added to the bottom of this page. Scroll down to see large photos of the finished work.

Each mosaic is seven feet high by four feet wide (86.25″ x 50.25″ including the steel frame) and presents the figures at life size— viewers can stand before them and see anatomy as though looking in a mirror.

Custom Fire Pit designs are all about making sure you get exactly what you’re looking for. Lead times for custom work are typically much longer, involving concept discussions, collaboration on image research, and drawings. I am not able to do custom sizes.
