“Who could imagine a poet wearing anything other than black?” Ann Demeulemeester’s verified line, from a 2008 Dazed interview, was “black to me is the colour of the poets”; the phrasing here is the folk edit that followed. Either way, the Antwerp Six designer meant black as literary equipment rather than absence — the color of interiority, of someone with more going on inside than they advertise. Worn on purpose, for the poetry of it, black becomes a statement instead of a safe default.
