“I want to put a soul in a garment. I don’t want my clothes to be perfect, because human beings are not perfect.” Ann Demeulemeester told the critic Eugene Rabkin in 2010 that she wanted a soul in a garment more than perfection: the asymmetric jacket, the twisted seam, the deliberately uneven hem, each flaw left in because people carry flaws too. She built the human error into the cloth on purpose. What we call imperfect is often just the mark that a living hand, and a real person, passed through.
