“I prefer the absurdity of writing poems to the absurdity of not writing poems.” Wisława Szymborska slipped this into “Possibilities,” from her 1986 collection The People on the Bridge — a list of small, stubborn preferences written under a Polish regime that made every private choice faintly political. She chose the absurdity that makes something over the absurdity that makes nothing, and left the preference standing as its own argument.
