“I always have a lot of vents and slits in the clothes I design, even inside the pockets so that I can slip my hands inside my clothes and touch my skin. I want to be able to feel my body naked inside my clothes.” Sonia Rykiel explained this to Warhol’s Interview in May 1977, in her Paris studio, describing clothes cut so a woman could feel her own skin through them — vents and slits even inside the pockets. She designed for the body’s private experience of the garment, the wearer as the first audience before any onlooker. Most clothes are made to be seen; hers were made, first, to be felt from the inside.
