“Freedom is always the freedom of those who think differently.” Rosa Luxemburg wrote this from a prison cell in 1918, in the manuscript later published as The Russian Revolution, warning her own Bolshevik allies that a freedom reserved for those who agree with the government amounts to no freedom at all. She held the line against the very revolution she had bled for; within a year right-wing paramilitaries murdered her and threw her body into a Berlin canal.
