“Fashion fosters cliches of beauty, but I want to tear them apart.” Tearing up the clichés was Miuccia Prada’s actual project: the “ugly chic” of the 1990s, dishwater browns and deliberately awkward hemlines that dared you to call them pretty. She found the received idea of beauty boring and set out to complicate it. Real style, she wagered, begins where easy prettiness ends and something stranger, harder to like, takes its place.
