“Dressmaking is the architecture of movement.” Pierre Balmain delivered this in a 1950 lecture in Brussels, drawing on his training as an architect before he founded his house in 1945. His point had a twist: the dressmaker’s problem is the harder one, because unlike a building, the structure has to walk, sit, and dance. To build for a body in motion is a stricter test than to build for a body that stays still — the thing you make has to hold up while it lives.
