Bittersweet Vine Steel and Copper Trellis, 2004
Steel, Copper
36″ x 20″ x 1″
Private Collection
This trellis was just an improvisation on a vine motif, but the peened copper berries remind me of Celastrus scandens, commonly called American bittersweet. Wild bittersweet was common where I grew up and when it bloomed, we would make wreathes of the vines. I was always very smitten with the colors and texture of the berries.
